Overview
Glacial acetic acid is acetic acid with almost no water — the name comes from the ice-like crystals it forms just below room temperature. Most of the world's supply is made by methanol carbonylation and goes into vinyl acetate monomer, purified terephthalic acid (PTA) for polyester, and acetate esters such as ethyl and butyl acetate used as solvents.
Smaller but important uses include cellulose acetate for filters and films, acetic anhydride, pharmaceuticals, and pH control in textile dyeing and leather processing. Buyers mainly care about assay, water content, colour and the levels of formic acid and heavy metals.
Applications
- 1Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) production
- 2Solvent in PTA manufacture for polyester
- 3Ethyl, butyl and other acetate ester solvents
- 4Cellulose acetate and acetic anhydride
- 5pH control in textile dyeing and leather
- 6Pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis

Storage & handling
Glacial acetic acid freezes at about 16 °C, so keep above 18 °C in cold climates. It is corrosive and flammable (flash point about 39 °C): use stainless steel 316 or HDPE, keep away from oxidisers. Ships as UN 2789, Class 8 with flammable subsidiary risk.

Questions
Acetic Acid, answered.
Pure acetic acid freezes at about 16.6 °C, so glacial acetic acid often solidifies in cold warehouses or during winter transit. It is not damaged; warm the drum gently in a heated room until it melts completely and mix before use.
'Glacial' means essentially water-free acetic acid, normally 99.8% or higher. The name comes from the ice-like crystals it forms just below room temperature. Dilute acetic acid solutions are sold separately.
Yes. Glacial acetic acid ships as UN 2789, Class 8 (corrosive) with a Class 3 flammable subsidiary risk, Packing Group II, in UN-approved drums or IBCs.
Yes. Cosmo Chemistry manufactures and exports Acetic Acid from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in the basic industrial chemicals and food ingredients industries. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.
Every shipment of Acetic Acid from Cosmo Chemistry includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
