Overview
BKC is a cationic surfactant: its positively charged head binds to the negatively charged cell walls of micro-organisms and disrupts them. That makes it effective at low doses against bacteria and algae, and it adds a mild cleaning action of its own.
It is usually supplied as a 50% or 80% aqueous solution. In water treatment it is dosed as a non-oxidising biocide, often alternated with chlorine so that organisms cannot adapt; in home and personal care it is the active in many disinfectants and sanitisers.
