Overview

On its own, sulphur vulcanises rubber slowly and inefficiently. Accelerators shorten cure times from hours to minutes and give better rubber properties. They are selected for scorch safety (how long the compound stays workable), cure speed and the crosslink structure they produce.

CBS is a sulphenamide accelerator with delayed action, which makes it a standard primary accelerator in tyres. MBTS is a thiazole with good processing safety, used widely in general rubber goods. TMTD is a fast thiuram accelerator used as a secondary accelerator or as a sulphur donor in efficient cure systems. Concern over nitrosamines from some thiurams has led to safer alternatives in some markets.

Questions

Rubber accelerators, answered.

A primary accelerator such as CBS or MBTS controls the main cure. A secondary accelerator such as TMTD is added in small amounts to boost cure speed or modify crosslinking.

CBS is a sulphenamide accelerator with delayed action: it gives long scorch safety during mixing and shaping, then a fast cure. That combination suits the heavy, multi-stage processing of tyres.

Yes. Because some thiurams such as TMTD can form nitrosamines, alternative accelerators that do not form regulated nitrosamines are available where regulations or customers require them.

Yes. Cosmo Chemistry manufactures and exports Rubber accelerators from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in the plastic & rubber industry. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.

Every shipment of Rubber accelerators from Cosmo Chemistry includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
