Overview
A zeolite's framework is full of uniform pores that hold exchangeable sodium ions. Calcium, magnesium and ammonium ions are swapped in, which softens water and removes ammonia; the same structure lets zeolites act as molecular sieves and adsorbents.
Synthetic zeolite 4A is the standard detergent builder replacing phosphates. Natural zeolites such as clinoptilolite are used in water filtration, aquaculture and animal feed.
Applications
- 1Detergent builder (zeolite 4A)
- 2Water softening and ammonia removal
- 3Filter media for drinking and pool water
- 4Aquaculture and animal feed additive
- 5Molecular sieve drying and adsorption
