Acid Dyes
Acid Dyes are anionic dyes for wool, silk, nylon and leather, supplied in levelling, milling and metal-complex ranges for different fastness needs.
- Grades / forms
- Levelling, milling, metal complex
Overview
Acid dyes carry sulphonic acid groups that bond ionically to the amino groups in protein and polyamide fibres when dyed in an acidic bath. That makes them the main dye class for wool, silk and nylon, as well as leather, paper, inks and anodised aluminium.
The range divides by how strongly the dye holds on. Levelling acid dyes migrate freely and give very even shades but moderate wash fastness. Milling acid dyes are larger molecules with better wet fastness for wool that will be washed. Metal-complex dyes (1:1 and 1:2) give the highest light and wet fastness, used for nylon sportswear, carpets, automotive textiles and leather.
Applications
- 1Wool and woollen yarn dyeing
- 2Silk dyeing
- 3Nylon hosiery, swimwear, sportswear and carpets
- 4Leather dyeing
- 5Paper, inks and wood stains

Questions
Acid Dyes, answered.
Levelling acid dyes give the most even shades and suit pale and medium colours where wash fastness is not critical. Milling acid dyes offer better wash fastness for wool. Metal-complex acid dyes give the best light and wet fastness and are the choice for nylon sportswear, carpets, automotive textiles and leather.
Yes. Send a physical swatch or colour standard and a lab dip is produced for approval before production. Every subsequent batch is released against that approved standard.
Levelling acid dyes are applied in a strongly acidic bath of about pH 2–4. Milling and metal-complex dyes are applied in weakly acidic conditions of about pH 4–6, typically buffered with acetic acid and sodium acetate.
