- Acrylic & paper grade
Overview
Basic (cationic) dyes carry a positive charge that bonds strongly to the negatively charged sites in acrylic fibre. On acrylics they give some of the brightest, most intense shades of any dye class, with good fastness. Their high tinctorial strength also makes them economical in paper, especially unbleached and mechanical pulps.
Acrylic grades are selected for compatibility, so that combination shades build evenly. Paper grades are often supplied as liquids that dose directly into the stock. Because they are cationic, basic dyes precipitate with anionic chemicals, so formulation compatibility must be checked.

Questions
Basic Dyes, answered.
Acrylic fibre contains negatively charged groups that bind cationic basic dyes strongly, producing very bright, intense shades with good wash and light fastness. Few other dye classes match their brilliance on acrylics.
Yes. Liquid basic dyes are supplied for paper mills that dose directly into the pulp. They avoid dust and dissolving, and are particularly effective on mechanical and unbleached pulps.
Generally not in the same bath. Cationic basic dyes form precipitates with anionic dyes, surfactants and auxiliaries. Retarders and auxiliaries for acrylic dyeing are chosen to be compatible with cationic dyes.
