Ammonium Sulphate

Ammonium Sulphate (21% N, 24% S) is a nitrogen and sulphur fertiliser for oilseeds, rice and sulphur-deficient soils, and an adjuvant in herbicide sprays.

Grades / forms
21% N
01

Overview

Ammonium sulphate supplies 21% nitrogen in ammonium form together with about 24% sulphur in sulphate form. Sulphur is increasingly deficient in soils, and crops such as oilseeds, pulses, onions and garlic respond strongly to it. The ammonium nitrogen is less prone to loss than urea nitrogen.

It is available as crystalline material, often a by-product of caprolactam production, and as granular grades for bulk blending. It acidifies soil, which benefits alkaline soils. In crop protection, ammonium sulphate is added to glyphosate sprays to counteract hard water and improve herbicide performance.

Questions

Ammonium Sulphate, answered.

Ammonium sulphate supplies sulphur as well as nitrogen and loses less nitrogen to the air than surface-applied urea. It suits sulphur-deficient soils, oilseeds and alkaline soils, though it costs more per unit of nitrogen.

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium that bind glyphosate and reduce its effect. Ammonium sulphate ties up these ions and improves glyphosate uptake by weeds.

Crystalline ammonium sulphate is economical for direct application and dissolving. Granular grades have a particle size that matches other granular fertilisers, so they are preferred for bulk blending.
