Overview

In wastewater, ferrous sulphate reduces toxic hexavalent chromium and removes phosphate and sulphide; oxidised to ferric, it acts as a coagulant. In agriculture it corrects iron deficiency in soils and supplies iron in animal feed premixes.

It is supplied as the heptahydrate (green crystals, about 19–20% Fe) and the monohydrate (about 30% Fe). The monohydrate is preferred for feed because it flows freely and carries more iron.

Applications

  • 1Coagulation and phosphate removal
  • 2Chromium(VI) reduction in effluent
  • 3Animal feed iron supplement
  • 4Iron fertiliser and lawn treatment
  • 5Iron oxide pigment production
