Essential oil derivatives
Essential oil derivatives — isolates and materials made from natural oils such as citronella, turpentine, mint and lemongrass — for fragrance, flavour and pharmaceutical use.
- Grades / forms
- Natural & nature-identical
Overview
Many important fragrance and flavour ingredients start from natural essential oils. Fractional distillation isolates components such as citronellal, citral, eugenol, eucalyptol and pinenes; further chemistry turns them into derivatives such as hydroxycitronellal, terpineol and isobornyl acetate.
These materials sit between natural oils and fully synthetic aroma chemicals. Depending on how they are made, they can qualify as 'natural' or 'nature-identical' under flavour and fragrance regulations. Because they come from crops, composition can vary with harvest, so batches are released against an approved standard.

Questions
Essential oil derivatives, answered.
A natural material is obtained from a natural source by physical, enzymatic or microbiological processes. A nature-identical material is chemically the same molecule but made by synthesis. Labelling rules for each differ between markets.
Because they come from crops, composition can vary with season and origin. Each batch is checked analytically and against an approved odour standard to keep performance consistent.
Yes. Allergen composition is provided so fragrance makers can meet labelling rules such as those in the EU, which require certain allergens to be declared above set thresholds.
