Overview

Froth flotation separates valuable minerals from gangue by making the target mineral water-repellent so it attaches to air bubbles. Collectors do that job: xanthates such as SIBX and PAX for copper, lead, zinc and gold sulphides, dithiophosphates where more selectivity is needed, and fatty acids for non-sulphide ores. Frothers such as MIBC and pine oil stabilise the froth that carries the mineral off the cell.

Downstream, anionic polyacrylamide flocculants settle concentrate and tailings in thickeners so water can be recovered. The right reagent suite depends on mineralogy, grind size, water chemistry and pH, so selection starts with the ore and laboratory flotation results rather than a catalogue number.

Applications

  • 1Sulphide flotation of copper, lead, zinc, nickel and gold
  • 2Non-sulphide flotation of phosphate and industrial minerals
  • 3Froth generation and stabilisation
  • 4Concentrate and tailings thickening
  • 5Process water recovery and clarification

Packing & storage

Packing

  • Xanthates: 50 kg steel drums or wooden boxes with liners
  • Frothers: 200 L drums, IBCs
  • Flocculants: 25 kg bags, jumbo bags

Storage & handling

Xanthates must be kept dry and cool: moisture and heat decompose them, releasing flammable carbon disulphide. They are classified as self-heating solids for transport.

Questions

Flocculants & collectors, answered.

Reagent selection starts from the ore mineralogy and laboratory flotation tests. Samples of candidate collectors and frothers are supplied for bench testing, and the reagent suite is then confirmed against grade and recovery results.

Xanthates should be stored dry, cool and sealed. Exposure to moisture and heat decomposes them, reducing strength and releasing carbon disulphide, which is flammable. They ship as self-heating solids (Class 4.2), commonly under UN 3342.

Sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) is a medium-strength collector used widely in copper and zinc circuits. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) is a stronger, less selective collector often used for gold-bearing sulphides and oxidised ores where maximum recovery is the priority.
