Overview

Most formaldehyde is reacted into resins that bind plywood, MDF and particleboard, and into moulding compounds and laminates. It is also an intermediate for pentaerythritol, hexamine and many other chemicals.

Formalin is a 37% aqueous solution, stabilised with methanol to stop polymerisation. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and sensitiser; exposure is tightly regulated.
