Microcrystalline Cellulose

Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) is the most widely used tablet filler and binder, supplied to Ph. Eur./USP-NF in particle-size grades such as 101, 102, 112 and 200.

Overview

MCC is purified, partially depolymerised cellulose. Under compression its particles deform plastically and bond strongly, giving hard tablets even at low compression force. That makes it the backbone of direct compression formulations, and it also works as a filler in wet granulation, capsules and extrusion–spheronisation for pellets.

Grades differ by particle size and moisture. Grade 101 (about 50 µm) suits wet granulation and fine blends; grade 102 (about 100 µm) flows better for direct compression; grade 112 has low moisture for moisture-sensitive APIs; grade 200 is coarser for high-speed presses. Food-grade MCC (E460) is also used in nutraceutical tablets.

Questions

Microcrystalline Cellulose, answered.

MCC 101 has a mean particle size of about 50 µm and suits wet granulation and fine blends. MCC 102 is about 100 µm, flows better and is preferred for direct compression.

MCC 112 has loss on drying of 1.5% or less and is used with moisture-sensitive APIs or effervescent formulations that would degrade with the normal 5% moisture of standard grades.

Yes. Food-grade microcrystalline cellulose (E460) is used as a bulking agent and anti-caking agent, and in nutraceutical tablets.

Yes. Cosmo Chemistry manufactures and exports Microcrystalline Cellulose from Surat, Gujarat, India to more than 55 countries, for customers in the pharma industry. Send your grade, quantity and destination port for a quotation within one business day.

Every shipment of Microcrystalline Cellulose from Cosmo Chemistry includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (COA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Certificate of Origin, third-party pre-shipment inspection and destination-specific regulatory documentation are arranged on request.
