p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is the key primary intermediate in permanent (oxidative) hair colour, and is also used in rubber antioxidants and aramid fibres.

Overview
In permanent hair colour, PPD is oxidised by hydrogen peroxide and reacts with couplers inside the hair shaft to form large coloured molecules, giving dark, lasting shades. It is the base of most brown and black hair dyes.
Cosmetic grade PPD is supplied at high purity with tight impurity limits; concentrations in hair dye are restricted by cosmetics regulations, and it is a known skin sensitiser.
