Overview
Any product that contains water can grow microorganisms. Preservatives prevent spoilage and protect consumers during the product's life, including after opening. Blends combine actives with complementary strengths so a single system covers bacteria, yeasts and moulds across the formula's pH.
Common paraben-free systems include phenoxyethanol with ethylhexylglycerin, organic acids such as sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate for products below about pH 5.5, and isothiazolinones for rinse-off and household products. Each active has a maximum permitted level that differs by market and product type, so the blend is chosen with regulation in mind.
