Overview
Propylparaben is more oil-soluble and more effective against fungi than methylparaben, so the two are combined to protect both phases of an emulsion. Maximum levels are set by regulation (for example 0.14% in the EU).
It is supplied as a white crystalline powder; the sodium salt is also available.

- Very slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (96 per cent) and methanol. Freely soluble in alcohol and ether; slightly soluble in boiling water and very slightly soluble in water.

- Not more than 0.1 ml of 0.1 M Sodium Hydroxide solution is required to change the colour of the indicator to blue
