Overview

In emulsion and ANFO-type explosives, sodium nitrate is added alongside ammonium nitrate as an oxidiser and to lower the crystallisation point. In glass it acts as a fining agent that removes bubbles.

It is also a nitrogen fertiliser, a component of heat-transfer salt baths for steel, and the cure in some meat products (food grade). It is supplied as white crystals or prills.
