Overview

Sodium thiosulphate reacts with chlorine and chloramines, so it is used to dechlorinate water for aquariums, aquaculture and laboratory work. In photography it is the classic fixer, dissolving unexposed silver halide.

It is also an alternative lixiviant for gold, an antichlor in textile bleaching, and an antidote in medicine. It is supplied as the pentahydrate in crystals or powder, typically 97–98% pure or better.
