Overview
Concentrated sulphuric acid, H₂SO₄, is made by the contact process from sulphur or smelter gases. At 98% it is a dense, oily liquid that is strongly acidic, strongly dehydrating and releases large amounts of heat on dilution.
More than half of the world's sulphuric acid goes into phosphate fertilisers. The rest is used to leach copper, nickel and uranium ores, pickle steel, make alum, ferric sulphate and other sulphates, regenerate ion-exchange resins and neutralise alkaline effluent. Battery-grade acid is a separate, high-purity grade.
Applications
- 1Phosphoric acid, SSP and ammonium sulphate fertilisers
- 2Heap and tank leaching of copper, nickel and uranium
- 3Steel pickling
- 4Alum, ferric sulphate and other sulphate chemicals
- 5pH correction of alkaline effluent
- 6Ion-exchange resin regeneration

Questions
Sulphuric Acid, answered.
Always add sulphuric acid slowly to water, never water to acid, with constant stirring and cooling. Dilution releases enough heat to boil water and spatter acid, so full face and body protection are essential.
Yes. At concentrations above about 93%, sulphuric acid forms a protective iron sulphate layer on carbon steel. Diluted acid attacks steel rapidly, so moisture must be kept out of steel tanks.
Yes. Sulphuric acid ships as UN 1830, Class 8 (corrosive), Packing Group II, in UN-approved packaging.
